141  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: January 2024 Transfer Window on: January 02, 2024, 13:51:21 pm
Fingers crossed Hoskins is back soon. Without him and Appere it is hard to see where too many goals are going to come from.
Good to see Bowie start getting a few. We could really do with Simpson or Hylton banging a few in.

It makes the results without the aforementioned more impressive (although TBF you would hope we'd beat Cheltenham at home) but not sure we'd sustain that without some re-enforcements.

It is the ideal time to back the manager to help us focus at the right end of the table. The issue is that we are all but safe from relegation (barring some kind of disaster) so in that respect the need to bolster isn't urgent.
The issue for a smaller club like us is that it’s easier to strengthen when in a relative position of strength.
If we are looking like we’re in a relegation battle then better players are loathe to join.
We are in a relatively strong position and on an upward curve and NOW is the time to make some better quality signings as we are a safe mid table league one side who with investment could well progress.
We can now rightfully be in the battle to attract in demand players and imo we shouldn’t miss the opportunity.
Let’s invest now and we have a chance of finally establishing ourselves as a steady league one club.
We know from the past what no investment at this level means for the club so let’s not do it again.
A couple of proven players , a couple of promising youngsters signed permanently with an eye to turning a profit down the line.
Let’s take the next step on from the loan market and establish ourselves as a league one club with promising saleable assets for the future.
The owners have got their golden goose , now back the club and the fans and not only will the club progress but you will have a higher value asset,
A lack of investment now will fan the flames of those who state that you are only interested in the land and not the future of the club…,
This window will answer that question for the present and the future.

Your rendezvous would be better in Abingdon - a coach load of us stopping prior to the game there...better than Oxford itself and the hassle of getting down the Cowley Rd, Temple Cowley, BBL...and as for sh*thole Kidlington!  Grin

Royal Blenheim now first place from second in Oxford though, to be fair!
Royal Blenheim is a good pub , the four candles has a decent beer selection too.

Well obviously not, as those guys back then thought nothing about playing three days consecutively. They tackled like men, putting their opponent in the stands if they could at the same time and played with a ball so heavy it gave you brain damage. Some of then still had jobs to go to. Yet funny isn't it, never seemed to get injured. Can you imagine those men rolling about in agony when they felt the slightest contact? It's like tap football now, passing endlessly along the back line before somebody launches it forward, often the goalkeeper. Watching Liverpool v Arsenal yesterday, I'm not sure they could have handled the old crazy gang.

By the way, Harry Enfield was a comedy programme.
Was it?
Thanks for pointing that out  Grin

As I wasn't around in the 1930's I couldn't comment on the amount of running players did, though I doubt they just wandered about. What I will say is that a fit man in the prime of his life should be able to manage two games over a 4 day period. Also, playing is the culmination of the week, it's what they should live for. I'd never have wanted to be "rested" if I had been good enough to be in their shoes.
You only have to look at the Harry Enfield sketch to see that it was a totally different game back then and in no way comparable with the modern game.

They would be an unassailable force, a supergroup like The Travelling Wilburys.
Random on PR, Mahoney on business strategy, CAD drawings (they’re coming), Beds on plastering and population statistics.

I feel they’re close to nearing the end of the line though  Wink

A couple of years ago, I sat next to Fish from Marillion on a Brighton bound train. He offered me a piece of shortcake.

Watching the Luton stewards give out free mince pies to the cobblers fans in the away end kenilworth road one Christmas.
They hadn’t allowed for the fact that the Luton goalie was defending the goal that end for the second half….
If you weren’t there I’m sure you can guess the rest  Grin

The irony is that 'Prawn sandwiches' have become a byword for hospitality toffs who aren't 'real' fans yet, Prawn sandwiches are the cheapest thing on offer from your local Budgens!  Grin
I was in a BP garage the other day and saw a ‘best ever’ prawn sandwich on sale for £5 !!!

It would want to be the best ever for that.

I used to like prawn sandwiches until I had one that was bad and gave me the trots

This.

That free kick that mattered lead to my fondest footballing memory and therefore one of the most important moments of my life.

If we become a constant mid table League One side - there are many on here who would welcome that, Super Sam's final goal of last season might be some supporters best football memory. Imagine if we never got promoted again! I know that people don't like getting relegated, but the roller coaster existence that we tend to have is exciting, it gives us the occasional promotion every few years. Imagine not having those exciting seasons ever again. Consigned to a life time of mid table obscurity.

Apologies for getting all philosophical, I am sitting in hospital waiting for my turn to go under the surgeon's knife. Alas not a brain transplant or I might be gaining some intelligence.
Hope everything goes well.
You’ll soon be back watching again
