I really dislike listening to Steve Phillips on the radio. Constantly references players fro, the 80’s and games he’s played in. ‘This Wimbledon striker reminds of Colin Lee the Gillingham striker from the late 80’s, remember him?’. No Steve, no one bloody does.
I remember him from when he used to run The Kings Head at Spratton. He was not very chatty, and the only decent thing about the pub was the Superman wallpaper in the blokes toilets. I only went there once.

Try intelligent positive comments instead of childish bitching!

Not capable too?...........sad!
I think you should recognise tongue in cheek comments. I might even miss MW's postings. We wouldn't be reminded sometimes that the Cobblers aren't perfect.  Grin Grin

I liked Tim’s commentary when listening only, but since watching on iFollow it is quite bewildering.  It’s like he’s watching a different game sometimes.  I also think he has a good his turn of phrase (apart from ‘he’s overcooked it’). I actually quite like Steve Phillips punditry too even if it isn’t exactly ‘expert’.  Unlike some of the other pundits he is truly a Cobblers supporter.

Fair point about his references to the 80's. I'm sure they're tiresome for many, especially younger fans, but I remember that era and I find his comparisons with today's game interesting. He was also a VERY good player (in a crap Cobblers side for most of his time with us, excepting Bill Dodgin's side of 1976) and so his comments about forward play in particular are well worth listening to IMO.

When I see the goals of an away game, what has actually happened for a goal is nowhere near how Tim has described it. Watching the Sunderland documentar, their BBC commentator and pundit described everything to the smallest detail. Maybe he just gets too carried away as he's a fan, and needs a Geoff Doyle type to be main commentator so he can do the nerdy Cobblers stuff?

This guy is paid for what he does. Just as you and I would be held to account for errors so should this fella. His mistakes with names is basic. Everything else is beans.

Tim is good with some irritating moments. Martin Smith is the best summariser, Colin Calderwood was also good before he went to Blackpool. I quite like Peter Walton. The one I'm not keen on is Steve Phillips for his constant reference to his playing career and how good he was.

One of Tim's irritating comments is his love for a "target man striker". At one point on Tuesday he said Ricky Holmes was the target man striker  Shocked He also thinks Smith is a pacy striker  Grin

Whenever you state opinion whether it be in commentary or wherever it will invariably be criticised, hence the punch ups on here? There are a select few commentators who are generally viewed as so good they are almost beyond criticism? However, someone held in that kind of reverence is hardly likely to spend an entire broadcasting career at Radio Noddy? Comparative to other local commentators my view is that Tim is excellent. I’m sure he accepts that opinions will vary on anyone performing his role, if you make comment in the public domain there will always be some people who will find you irritating? Unless you’re me obviously?

I would also just like to point out that coincidentally when reading some of the posts on here they bare no relevance to the game I have just watched?

Peter Jones was my all time favourite football (and other sports) radio commentator. He used to paint great pictures with his voice that made you feel like you were actually there in person. He was also a great presenter on Sport on two (radio 2) later to become Five live sport and Wimbledon to name a couple. He was taken ill during coverage of the boat race and died in 1990, he was sadly missed.

I like Tim's enthusiasm. He get's more right that he get's wrong, and he trys to make the games interesting even when there is a lull, though he definiltely isn't great at getting players right first time.

Only feedback for him is that he sometimes get's a bit carried away with assessments. One loss, and it's talk about a relegation and how much pressure Curle will be over... get a win and he'll be then asking whether it's too soon to be asking about the playoffs.

Sounds like a description of most of the posters on here

I think I prefer the BBC Northampton "cottage industry" like coverage to the Sky corporatist, propaganda-ridden Martin Tyler "and it's live" cliche-ridden approach. We even get unintentional comedy (Leon's failure to notice the yellow card issued to Sowerby early on against MK Dons being an example).

Wasn't Martin Tyler the one who got named "Officer Crabtree" after the copper in Allo Allo. he started off calling David Ginola, David Ginola, then it was David Gino-la and finally Dav-id Shino-la. Oh no, it's that idiot who thinks he can speak French?

Last night Tim said the winners of tonights game get over £22,000. I would have expected somebody in his position to know that this season the money is split 75% to the winners and 25% to the losers.

First time that I've listened to him, both he and Dave Savage did a good job...
