The rearranged home game with Oxford takes place this Tuesday night, both teams now desperate for some points.....The Cobblers looking to bounce back from a disjointed 0-1 home reverse against Crewe and Oxford off the back of a 2-0 loss at home to Blackpool.
The U's make the trip up the A43 sitting in 11th place in the table, just three points but five places outside the playoff zone. Their 4-0 win over us back in December started them on a run of NINE consecutive victories, ended with a defeat by Doncaster which was followed by another couple of wins but since then their form has been patchy. They have only won 2 of their last 9 league games, they failed to score in six of those nine games too.
Away from home they sit 9th in the table, 7 wins and 7 defeats (4 drawn games) although they have only lost away from home at Hull and Doncaster since the end of October.

Matty Taylor has 13 goals to his name, only 2 though in his last 16 appearances. He scored twice against us earlier in the season. Olamide Shodipo has 11 in all competitions, again though he is on a barren run with only the one goal in his last 12 games.
Former MK Dons and Charlton manager Karl Robinson is at the helm, with a decent 41% win ratio with Oxford.

Head to head, well now 35 games between the sides, we edge the wins with 16 to their 15, just four draws in the 35 games. Three of those draws have come in Northampton, with us winning nine times and the U's just twice, their last win on our patch was in 2014, and in the three games at Sixfields since then they have failed to register a goal although in two of those games neither did we! The last two games at Sixfields have ended goalless.
That 4-0 success for the U's earlier in the season was their first success over us in nine attempts. We were doing ok until the second half when we shipped those four goals.

Christopher Pollard from Bury St Edmunds takes charge of the game, he's in his second year on the EFL list and has a high card count this season, 71 yellow and EIGHT red cards handed out in 21 games. He handled our early season PJT group defeat to MK Dons and was also in charge of our FA cup tie at Chippenham last season. This would appear to be his first visit to Sixfields and his first Oxford United assignment. Trevor Kettle is the fourth official!!

I had a very good feeling about the Crewe game and look where that got us. I think I ought to have a very bad
one about this game. Undecided

Watch your tackles Shaun McWilliams, as GPC says this referee has already produced 8 red cards this season and it appears is trying to take the trophy from Charles Breakspeare who is lagging behind on 6. Perhaps he could do us a favour and reduce Oxford to 10 men early in the game.
After losing 5 of their first 6 away games Oxford have only lost 2 of the last 12. In their 18 away games they have failed to score 7 times but have scored 27 in the other 11 beating most of the bottom 6. They have only kept 3 clean sheets but on the other hand we have failed to score in 12 of our 18 home games but our record on tuesday nights is petty good.
Oxford do not do well against teams who apply a high pressing game, are you aware JB?. We desperately need to win this game but after saturday it is difficult to have any confidence. It also seems that Miller is struggling with an injury and could be missing.

Here's my team suggestion for tomorrow night.

Mitchell
Kioso  Jones   Horsfall   Sheehan
 McWilliams Mills
Hoskins    Watson  Korboa
A Jones

With our problems scoring, we must not concede hence using Mills in a defensive midfield role with McWilliams. Hopefully Hoskins and Korboa can create something for Watson and Alex Jones. The alternative could be to swap Mills and Sheehan and perhaps this might be better as Sheehan has a greater range of passing.

We need high press from the off... Oxford United struggle immensely from teams who take it to them.
A hesitant, sit back, Curlesque performance, sees them play from the back, grow in confidence... and we are done for!
They are not taking the game too lightly!

Absolutely - the games we have impressed under JB all started with high pressure from the off - a little less disappearing up our own arse with clever tactics and more of win every 50/50 ball - if we play our remaining games cautious we will go down.

I wonder if an old fashioned 4-4-2 might be worth a go. Most players are comfortable in that system and we MIGHT get more of a goal threat. It’s time for Jones to start as well, who knows he could be the answer up front

i would start Jones and see how long he lasts .
We have to score goals .
Miller won’t be fit and Marshall flopped on saturday yet again .
Jones and Edmo up front for me .
McWilliams must stay on the pitch .

Agree on Edmonds & Jones; McW must wise up to his tackling limitations.
By half time 4-0 up it’s been done before!

I actually agree with that, Marshall has to start with Jones and Edmo up front.
McWilliams doesn’t know how to tackle and will be sent off very soon.

We are assured that the team will get it right tonight and we are going into all of the last 10 games with the intention of taking all 3 points from each. So no need to worry.
