The Cobblers make their first trip to the new Plough Lane to take on fellow relegation strugglers AFC Wimbledon. AFC came about in 2002 after the other Dons were allowed to be franchised off to Milton Keynes. Starting out in the Combined Counties League they made their way up the steps through the Isthmian Leagues and into the Conference South and Premier before being promoted to the Football League in 2011, after five years in the fourth tier they were promoted via the playoffs to League 1 in 2016 and have been there ever since.
AFC began their climb whilst groundsharing with Kingstonian, first being the tenants, then the leaseholders of Kingsmeadow and there they stayed until this season when they returned to their "home" in the London Borough of Merton to a new ground built on the site of the old greyhound stadium, just 250 yards from the original Plough Lane. Due to Covid they are yet to play in front of fans at their new home, the opening of which was delayed slightly forcing them to play early season games at Loftus Road. Part of that delay also led to some of their home games being switched to the away game and this has led to them still having to play seven of their last 11 fixtures this season at home.
They sit in 23rd place on 33 points, three behind us but they do have two games in hand. As I said they have 11 games left of which 7 are at home, they also have a number of games to play against the teams around them, our fixture being one of those.
They come into the game on a run of seven games without a win, however five of those have been drawn including last Tuesday against Wigan (1-1) and Saturday against Charlton (2-2), both games where they came from behind to grab a share of the points. From their 16 home games this season they have only won three, one of those at Loftus Road against Blackpool, and their Plough Lane victories against Peterborough and Gillingham. They have won just two of their last 21 league games. That run helped to see off former manager Glyn Hodges who was sacked in on the last day of January, Mark Robinson taking over as Head Coach. Joe Pigott is their star man, he has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season, although none of those have come in the last nine games, Ryan Longman is next in the list with 8 including both goals against Charlton last Saturday.
No current Cobblers connections in their ranks as far as I can see, so onto the Head-to-Head....since their promotion to the Football League we have met each other 15 times, and only tasted defeat once, that defeat coming in the home game of the 2017/18 season. Of the seven games we played at Kingstonian we won four and drew the other three. Earlier this season the game at The PTS ended in a 2-2 draw, all the goals in the first half hour with Warburton and Korboa on the scoresheet for us.
Ben Toner is the appointed ref for this game, he's in his sixth season on the League list, he took charge of AFC Wimbledon in his very first game back in 2015. His last Cobblers appointment was in February 2020 when he oversaw our 3-2 defeat at Walsall in a game we had led 2-0. He also refereed the MK Dons v AFC Wimbledon game last year, surprisingly the only game last season where he didn't issue a single card! So far this season he has flashed 77 yellow and two red cards in his 26 games.

Right at the top of the list as well...good shout! He did indeed play 25 games for us back in 2011. He's missed the last few games with a knee injury though....

As we are unbeaten in the 7 game history of this fixture we need to maintain this record preferably with a win as it represents our best chance of an away win from our remaining fixtures. Although we have not won any of our last 12 away games the 4 clean sheets we have on our travels have come from the last 8 games. AFC have kept only 2 clean sheets in their 16 home games and have conceded 30 goals conceding at least 2 goals in 10 of these games. Also in their last 7 home games they have failed to score in 4 and have totalled just 4 goals. Repeat tuesdays performance and I think we can come away with a 2-1 victory.

Hope so, this really is a must win game. If we win, I reckon 50% chance of staying up, lose and probably less than 30%.

A winning replay at Plough Lane in 82 led us to Gillingham in the FAC 2nd. Following another replay and a 3-2 win for the Cobblers...it was European Champions, Aston Villa at the County Ground. A tight turn by Mark Walters was the difference.
So onto the New Plough Lane...

See that we are 7th in the league form table. Can't complain about that, Brady has only got KC's players, has not been able to change the dynamics of the team.

I was stood at the front of The Hotel End at pitch level almost exactly where Walters turned that in. We played well and if only Steve Massey had taken that half chance at 0-0 things may have been different! Massive today, absolutely mahooosive, god I hope your prediction comes true.

Would be shocked if there is 5 goals in the match but am hoping we can pinch a narrow 1-0 win

Predictions are of course, simply that! However, your reasoning doesn't quite stack up. Wimbledon, annoyingly have a consistent habit of scoring late goals. The Cobblers have to an extent, found their shooting boots recently - even Hoskins!

Yeah, but how many times did we end up on the wrong end of a bad result at Plough Lane. Terrible ground for Northampton. Let's hope the new place is a lot better.

Did you go on the pitch about half way through the first half? Quite a few of us blamed the crush as the opportunity to make a brief appearance for the Cobblers.
