So, the end of the season is here and The Cobblers fate is already sealed....we will be playing League 2 football again next season. As for our illustrious hosts, they are assured of a playoff place, and can finish 3rd, 4th or 5th dependant on results.
Sunderland currently sit in 4th place in the league, a recent shaky run of seven games without a win ultimately put the boot into their automatic promotion chances, but they stopped the rot last time out with a 3-1 win at Plymouth.
Their home form has been decidedly average, only 11th best in the league, with nine wins and six defeats. Overall though they have the fewest defeats of any team in the league (9), but that is balanced out by the most draws in the league (16). Portsmouth, MK Dons, Wigan, Charlton, Plymouth and Blackpool have all left The Stadium of Light with the three points.

Lee Johnson is in charge, son of our former manager Gary Johnson. Lee joined the Mackems back in December and has only suffered seven defeats in his 36 games so far. Johnson junior has had a winning managerial record at every club he's managed so far (Oldham, Barnsley and Bristol City before Sunderland)

Charlie Wyke leads their goalscoring charts by a country mile....the striker has netted 30 goals this season, 25 of them in the league. Grant Leadbitter follows on next with seven goals in the League, Chris McGuire has five in the league and three in the cups. Both Wyke and Aiden McGeady missed the last game with injury concerns, neither were anything serious though and both are available for selection on Sunday, however manager Johnson has already said he may rotate the squad with the upcoming playoffs in mind.

There have only been 11 previous meetings between Sunderland and The Cobblers,  5 wins for them and three for us. This will be our first ever League trip to The Stadium of Light, we have played there once previously though, when we managed to throw away a two goal lead with just four minutes remaining in a Carling Cup tie back in 2008.....I remember it well! We went on to lose the penalty shootout that night. Cobblers scorers were Colin Larkin and Luke Guttridge. Our last League meeting on Wearside was an end of season defeat back in 1988, another game I went to. Eric Gates throwing himself to the floor to win a penalty, future Cobbler Marco Gabbiadini pulling the strings for them, but a superb Tony Adcock goal for the Cobblers drew warm applause from all sides of the ground. We watched as our playoff hopes went up in smoke whilst they won the title. We have won just the once up there, back in 1963 as we were on our run up the Leagues, a 2-0 win early in the 1963/64 season was followed up by us winning the return at the County Ground 5-1.

Bringing us right up to date was a fairly entertaining 0-0 draw earlier this season, the first League draw between the two teams.

Samuel Barrott from West Riding is the appointed referee for this game, he's a first year EFL ref but he's making his second trip to Sunderland following on from handling their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury in January, he also reffed their 2-1 Trophy win at Oldham in December. He has handled one Cobblers game this season too, our 4-3 reverse at Stadium:MK, one of a handful of games where he did not have to produce a card. 83 yellows and 4 reds in 31 games is his total to date.

Well, I hope you've enjoyed these previews.....i'll be back with more next season....subject to demand!  Grin

I remember that as well. A  couple of minutes left, thinking game over, our driver sparked the coach up, and moved it. Doing so he activated his tacho. It of course went to extra time, tacho still running. We got as far as Watford Gap before he had to pull over and take his break. Long day that was.

I remember being there for the Eric Gates ‘non’ penalty and shouts of “Where’s you famous Roker roar”, which was ultimately leading to the end of the Carr golden era. Wow, over 30 years ago!

Probably another game of Northampton nil, we might have a chance of a goal if Jim Motgomery was still in goal for them.
On a brighter note although we have had a poor season at least we have escaped Charles Breakspeare.
My most memorable Sunderland game was in December 1963, our first season in the old Division 2 and the season before our promotion to Division 1. This season Sunderland were promoted and we beat them 5-1 on a frosty pitch, after the pre match warm up we changed into baseball boots and they could not get anywhere near us with their studs.

Portsmouth vs Accrington is the only game being televised as far as I know.

Charlie Woods in goal here? Arnold is injured and Mitchell has been a disappointing loanee, so might as well give the kid a game.

The new era begins...

Don't play any of the loans...

Give our own players the fantastic experience of playing in such a stadium, as they won't be playing in anything like it in L2  Grin

I reckon Brady needs to show his intentions and go with a squad that suggests who he may want to keep and potentially be bringing on (youth) for next season. Forget about the loans who have been generally underwhelming and will be gone without another thought for us next season, although I wouldn’t be averse to signing Miller, who if/when completely fit, could be an asset. Tomorrow’s a free hit and who knows, we might be surprised. Chuck has to start.

Are you suggesting Jim Montgomery wasn’t very good, he was certainly impressive in the ‘73 cup final and played for them over 600 times, or that we’d have more chance against a 77 year old? Smiley

Shoemender - Jim Montgomery certainly was a decent 'keeper, my comment that we might score with him in goal was due to his current age and not past capabilities.

So what is your opinion of the side picked for today’s game, For me he has picked the best side available?

Jim Montgomery's mum lived next to my auntie Ethel. She got me his autograph after the '73 cup final. I've lost it.
