February 4th 1984. Encountered Zulus on the train to Leicester, moody Millwall on their way to Sheffield United, having been ambushed by West Ham early that morning, non-stop pitch invasions from a swollen 600 odd Northampton invasion...and PC Elizabeth Tart making the news on Mercia Sound that night...as did the tuck shop demolition and other antics at Saltergate that day!
I vaguely remember using the words “sit” followed by the arm gesture made famous by biddy tv dog trainer Barbara Woodhouse. It didn’t have the impact I’d hoped. Being a lover not a fighter I didn’t get involved in the Sheffield Utd shenanigans either. I seem to recall having a fresh cup of bovril at the time and was wearing my new Fila top accessorised with the scarf my mum knitted me. You don’t want to be rolling around on the floor with that ensemble.

The 2 fracas that stick in my mind was the infamous Chesterfield away, around 83 with the fuzz sending the dogs in the away end. The other was Sheffield Utd at home around the same time. I remember a load of them in THE and the MOC being a great big fat bloke with a perm and a sheepskin jacket. Someone played urban rodeo with him and lasted about 30 seconds, and people wonder why we miss The County Ground.
There was another Saltergate fracas in 1994, final day of the season we finished bottom but didn't get relegated due to Kidderminster's ground not being up to League standard. All kicked off at halftime with corner flags being used as spears as well. John Barnwell came on the PA to ask for calm! He got it an we lost 4-0.

That was my first ever away game. I wondered what the f*** was going on!

I cant possibly say where (on the pitch) I am. I was on the away terrace. And came out to find a parking ticket on my van. As an aside, theres a couple of faces that I recognise on the pitch. A bit slimmer than they are now.

There were two more massive offs with Chesterfield. It went off all around the town in 88 and 89, and to be fair to them they were as game as Northampton - although not as good.

I loved a good ruck. I remember being cornered at Mansfield with Pete Folwell, we mashed a few smug faces that day. A copper ended up running backwards into a double decker and we read him his rights!
That was a tragic loss. R.I.P. Pete. A good lad.

Anyone remember Dickie Hutt (sp)? Black leather jacket. Memories of him in 1981 away at Rochdale running behind the goal (p*ssed) swinging to kick the ball, missing and collapsing into the hoardings. Sure he used to get a chant. Probably dead by now. Marvo would know him.

Used to drink in the Welcome and many other reputable ale houses with Dickie Hutt.. Haven’t seen him years, since I left the beautiful boroughs.

I knew people from a certain ‘era’ would know him. I haven’t seen or heard of him for donkeys. Considering our sprawling population it’s still a small town at times.

What about the geezer called 'Elvis'? Bit of a character or characture I'd guess! Bald, Ming the Merciless bloke with black leather jacket... probably in the twilight of his career when I started going in the early eighties!

That could well have been Dickie, although a few black leather jackets back then! I know tons of faces but few names. Was always a regular in those tiny early 80’s away crowds.

When we played Aldershot in a snowstorm a few years back I popped into a Pub very close to their ground. It was full of Northampton Supporters, the atmosphere was a like a Western full of oldies who looked ready to kill. Anyway I stayed there as it was so cold that night and wore a sheepskin coat with a matching maroon beanie with a little NTFC badge. Felt very out of place but came to no harm! It was a very snug and warm place. We won 1-2 with Carlyle(my hero) scoring. The away end did well that night only 150 of them but I enjoyed it all the same. Pretty sure Coolie was there!

I'm guessing it was the pub halfway up the hill, not far from the away turnstiles in the park? Geary, et-al all in there!

That description seems to fit. If my memory serves me there were 'steep set of steps' to the Pub door. (Try saying that quickly). Often thought how many might have fallen down after a pint or two.
