So....here's your match preview as the Cobblers travel to Newport to play the rearranged fixture originally pulled due to the South Wales outfit not having a completed pitch!

Newport County AFC, not to be confused with Newport County....the club who went bust in February 1989. The latter were Welsh Cup winners in 1980, and as a result ventured into Europe to play European Club football, they made it as far as the Cup Winners Cup Quarter Final back in 1981, but just seven years later found themselves unable to complete their league fixtures and as a result were expelled from the League, which eventually saw them shut down through bankruptcy in 1989.
The new Newport County AFC was soon formed and started life in the Hellenic League, making it to the Southern League in the 90's, the Conference in the 2000's and finally under the late Justin Edinburgh they made it "back" into the Football League in 2013 after winning an all Welsh playoff final against Wrexham.

This is their 9th season in the fourth tier.....they have made the playoff final in the last two completed seasons (2019 lost to Tranmere in the last minute of extra time and 2021 lost to Morecambe again in extra time), an average start has seen them play six league games so far...2 wins 2 draws and 2 defeats. They pulled off a good 1-0 win at Ipswich in the first round of the EFL Cup, but found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-0 hiding against Southampton in round 2. They have also beaten Plymouth at home in the Papa Johns.

This will be only their second league game at home this season, their first resulted in a draw against Harrogate. they have won in the league at Oldham and at Tranmere.

Michael Flynn can be considered a long serving manager, having been at the helm of the Exiles since March 2017, his record of 101 wins in 247 games is not too shabby.

Timmy Abraham is in on loan from Fulham, he has two goals to his name, they also have Finn Azaz from Aston Villa and Jake Cain from Liverpool. At the other end of the scale, Kevin Ellison, at the ripe old age of 42 is still around!

County AFC moved to Rodney Parade back in 2012, the same time as new Chairman and Euromillions lottery winner Les Scadding took over the club. He only stuck around for three years, but the club remains at Rodney Parade, a ground shared with Dragons and Newport RFC, and owned by the Welsh Rugby Board. Cobblers record there stands at one win, one draw and two defeats.

The win was on our first visit, Hallam Hope and Darren Carter scored to drive us to a 2-1 win in 2014, Lawson D'Ath and Marc Richards scored late on in a 3-2 defeat later the same year, Sam Hoskins and Marc Richards (again) netted in a 2-2 draw in October 2015, and our last visit there saw a solitary Andy Williams strike in a 3-1 defeat back in 2018. We have played them twice at home since then, winning both games. Andy Williams and Sam Hoskins again both finding the net in our 2-0 League win in a game which will be two years to the day tomorrow.

Craig Hicks is slated to be the man in the middle, he's been on the league list since 2017. Last year he dished out 95 yellow and 4 red cards in his 34 games, and so far this season 17 yellows in five games. Our last meeting with Mr Hicks came in our 2-0 Trophy defeat at MK last season, he was also in charge of our league defeat at Plymouth. He last reffed Newport in April as the Welsh side dispatched Sc***horpe 4-0 in a league game.

Given many if not most (especially with other threads backwards and forwards about fan ownership of clubs) would say that it's the fans that are 'the club', don't think you are in a postion to tell all and sundry who or what we should not be confused with!
Any of those old enough, as well as family tied younger generations, Newport County fans are certainly the same as those watching the re-formed Newport AFC!
Bristol City shouldn't be confused with Bristol City 1982 Ltd Huh?

Jeez, Kevin Ellison is still going, GPC???

What are the odds he comes on with 10 minutes to go and scores the winner? Roll Eyes

Interesting to see how we fare travelling to a foreign land for an international match. Our record away to Newport is decent as we have come away with some points from just over 50% of the total away fixtures.
Lose and we will have a mid table 50-50 record of 3 wins and losses and 1 draw.
Perhaps the referee is a good omen as none of his 5 games this season have resulted in a home win.

That would be about right for him....he's been a thorn in our side on more than one occasion! His appearances this season have been sporadic, he came on as a half time sub in that 0-8 home defeat to Southampton. He was an unused sub in their following League game at Salford but has not made the matchday squad since then. He scored the winner at Oldham this season.
He signed a contract extension which takes him through to next summer but he also has a role as one of the clubs development squad coaches.

Just looking back through his history....he scored against us for Chester way back in 2004.....!

Interesting looking at the recent cross-comparison form. I know different competitions / seasons etc but really not a lot between the two sides.

They've been involved in high scoring draws the last twice, I could see this being another. If we could edge it then great, tough place to go.

Pollock for Lewis and a change of starting formation will make us more creative? I admire but don't share your positivity!

JB thought we did well on Saturday and deserved more against the top of the league side. So, with this in mind, I expect the same starting 11 and a 0-0 draw.

There only clean sheet has been against Oldham, who are dreadful. There last two games they have played second and third and not lost, so its hard to know what sort of team they are.

Saying that, I cant see us beating them for some reason, would like to see to Pollock start rather than Lewis, but doubt that will happen ether

I'm going

2-1 Newport
