I thought that was a really scrappy game with quite a bit of needle, but we deserved to win it. Newport huffed and puffed second half but didn't really create a great deal, whereas both Kabamba and Pinnock should have scored. Kion Etete was immense with his hold up play in the 17 or so minutes he was on the pitch. Guthrie man of the match for me.

As for the extra time, I was expecting about 8 but where he got 12 from I do not know and even then it ended up being nearer 14.

Good win, showed good spirit. Flores and Hoskins liabilities! Pinnock better perf. Still struggling to create much in front goal. Kabamba header far too close to the keeper. But at end of season all that counts is the 3 pets

Bungle, according to Radio Northampton Newport were playing 4-4-2, don't argue with our Tim.

Good win! Played well 👏. Flores is poor, and would rather Sowerby start on Saturday.

Third in the league with only 4 goals conceded in 7 games. Has to go down as a very decent start and the defensive unit (including McWilliams and Roberts) deserve a lot of credit.

However, we might be even better off right now if Brady could be a bit tactically braver and more fluid. We've still only scored two goals from open play in 7 games and we're still not creating many chances.

I'm sounding like a stuck record here, but I just simply don't know why he's sticking with 4-4-2. Our 4-4-2 is quite static and predictable and there's very little movement 'between the lines'. As others have said it reeks a lot of 2003 era Colin Calderwood.(There are certainly worse things, but the game has moved on.) The times when we looked most dangerous was when Koiki came forward on the overlap and got some dangerous crosses in, but McGowan didn't really do the same on the right so we looked a bit lopsided. Teams playing 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 end up with the equivalent of an extra man in midfield against us and the better sides (Rochdale, Forest Green) will make us pay.

The forwards have only scored two league goals between them and it's hard to see what they're contributing other than workrate. To be fair, Kabamba only had one headed chance and Rose was given absolutely nothing to feed off. Etete showed excellent hold-up play when he came on and I still think that he will punish teams at this level if we can get better service to him. I think he'd be more than capable of playing as a lone striker with some dynamic midfielders behind him as this is very much the dominant paradigm within Premier League coaching structures.

Ultimately, I think we'd lose very little and potentially gain a lot by switching one of the forwards for an extra midfielder. A switch like this would make us much less predictable and more fluid and I'm sure it wouldn't compromise our defensive solidity. Sowerby showed a range of passing far superior to any other midfielder and him and McWilliams could develop into an excellent pivot at the base of a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1.

Overall, a very solid and creditable start. However, if we have aspirations of beating the very top teams in this division, or establishing ourselves as a force eventually capable of sustaining League One football, or, dare I say it, of producing 'bums of seats' football then Brady needs to be a bit braver.

Minimum - 30 seconds per sub. 6 substitutions = minimum for substitutions = 3 minutes. The rest for wasting time and the bad injury.

Thought that Kioki played well, certainly better than on Saturday. Newport were poor most of the games and their rare chances came from some lose play in midfield. What impressed me was our ability to try and play a tiny bit  of football against a real village side of cloggers! Thought that Flores did ok when he came on. For those who thought we would lose, the Newport thread will be quiet. What do you think Mysterious?

Rightly in the top three off the strength of the defence and goalkeeper. When we start firing at the other end, we’ll be pushing hard for the title. Great win tonight guys.

14 minutes injury time and they didn’t have one shot on target. Can’t describe how angry I'd be if Cobblers were trailing by one and didn’t threaten at least once in that amount of time.

Keep this going boys, let’s go 👌🏽

Good Evening

As I never watched or listened to that I think I got off lightly! By all accounts Newport were not very good tonight, and Cobblers probably deserved to win. I’ll now have to wait till February for the re-match.
Cheers for now!

I actually enjoyed watching that on ifollow. A feisty League Two battle. Newport never really worried me. If we can click at the top end of the pitch we'll be up near the top come the end of the season.

Brady could start by playing his best team, why the fûck Etete was on the bench?
Sowerby head and shoulders the best we have in midfield, back four and keeper pick themselves.
Just as an observation we are completely fûcked if any of our defenders get injured.

i think this is work in progress .
Defensively we are sound - the keeper is good and we always have 2 players in support out of possession within 6 yards .
Look at the stripes on the pitch at home - they are distanced for a reason.
Clearly we need to work on creativity but we have built a base that is sound .
Sowerby now has to keep his place and it’s a case of building on this start .
We need to commit more men forward and i think we will see a side develop .

Agreed, happy to be 3rd after 7 games. Our defence is solid, GK is a massive upgrade on last season. The midfield is evolving, and our strikers will hit some form soon...
Reasons to be cheerful...  Smiley
