The Cobblers make the trip down to Crawley for their next League assignment, making their fifth visit to The Peoples Pension Stadium or the Broadfield Stadium if you prefer.
Crawley sit in 19th place in League 2, albeit only having played three games, one of which they won (2-1 at home to Salford) and two of which they've lost (0-1 at Hartlepool and then 3-6 at Forest Green). They also bowed out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle, losing to Gillingham in a epic penalty shootout 10-9 after the game ended 2-2.
John Yems is the manager, he took over in December 2019 and has since led Crawley to 27 wins and 26 defeats in 76 games in charge. Fans were somewhat less than complimentary about his tactics and substitutions during the heavy defeat to Forest Green on Saturday.
Crawley joined the league in 2011 after winning the Conference with a massive 105 points, they also made it to the 5th round of the FA Cup as a non-league team that season. Success followed the following season as they won promotion to League 1 at the first attempt, again making the 5th round of the FA Cup along the way. Just three seasons at the higher level though before relegation back to the fourth tier in 2015, and now they embark on their 7th consecutive season at this level after a solid 12th place finish last year. Max Watters was their goalscoring sensation last year, scoring 16 goals before Christmas which earned him a million pound move to Cardiff in the January transfer window. He only appeared three times for the Bluebirds though and is now out on loan at MK Dons.
Men to watch in their squad are Jake Hessenthaler, top scorer with three including two in that Forest Green game, Ashley Nadesen and Kwesi Appiah who came off the bench to score in the last game.
This will be the tenth game between the Cobblers and Crawley, the first of which back in 1991 saw us suffer a "giantkilling" as we lost 4-2 in the FA Cup. That game was played at the old Town Mead ground which Crawley vacated in 1997. In our four previous visits to the new ground we have won two and lost two, the last of which was a 4-0 reverse on Boxing Day 2019. Our last win over Crawley was a year earlier when a Van Veen penalty was enough to give us the three points.
Lee Swabey will officiate, he's been on the League list since 2015, only one game so far this season though. Last season he didn't produce a red card in his 29 games, and only 67 yellows suggests he's one of the more lenient refs we'll come across. His last Cobblers appointment was back in October 2019 when he took charge of our 2-0 home win over Salford, booking four Cobblers players. His last encounter with Crawley came a few weeks later as he handled their 4-1 FA Cup win over Sc***hrope.

Connolly McWilliams Pinnock Pollock
Etete Hoskins
Pinnock and Pollock to switch it up.
Harriman to get the full 90, even if half fit.

GPC - I think we had Lee Swabey referee our 1-3 defeat at Posh in April 2021.

Mysterious - I think your 2 favourite players will be some of the first names on the team sheet. Cannot see McGowan being left out after his display on tuesday and Harriman is short of match fitness. Mills seems to divide opinion on here but not by the management otherwise they would not have made him captain. McWilliams and Flores are struggling for fitness and both are doubtful. There have been calls to abandon 442 and play a lone striker but I do not see that happening. Crawley generally play a back 4 and recently adopted a 4411 formation, in 4 games they have scored 7 times but conceded 10 and nobody in the division has conceded more league goals than them. So another game against a team from the bottom half of the division, if we are to challenge at the top we must get something from this game. Roberts
McGowan Horsfall Guthrie Mills
McWilliams/Lewis
Hoskins Pinnock Koiki
Etete Kabamba

Crawley are in no way going to challenge for anything in this league, so I believe this is the first strong indicator of where this teams at.
2-1 with Hoskins on the score sheet

According to Soccerbase Sam Allison reffed that one....our official site does say that Swabey was the ref though......

I really don’t think you can draw anything from one match, pretty much every team in this division is capable of performing on their day, the teams in the top half will be ones that do it on a consistent basis.

I read somewhere that “the matador” Charles Breakspear dished out one of the lowest percentage of cards in his first season on the list. Obviously got a bollocking off Mike Reilly or whoever and metamorphosed into the notorious individual we have today. No telling with referees these days, the standard seems to be getting worse too.

Hate to imagine the total cost of attending those games! What I can't quite grasp is why you haven't given your opinion on some of the players/or game, you don't have to of course but a second opinion is always interesting. Hope it is not still personal
