It's strange, as without Soccer Saturday, it was almost one big advert for the Sky package.

Makes me laugh how Sky are advertising this like they are giving something instead of taking something away.

I know, I was actually shocked at the idiocy of that advertising campaign, if their intention was to make me sure in my mind that I'll never, ever subscribe to the arrogant w@nkers aslong as I live, then well done to them.

just get sky
For those of us who work away all week, where's the benefit in that? Great I've got Sky at home, but not on freeview where I stay during the week.

Just Sky getting greedy imo, that's all it is. They were forced in the courts recently to allow BT to show Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, so are now going about stripping those two channels of their most popular shows. That's the reason Soccer Saturday will now be "exclusively on Sky Sports News", and SSN is now a subscription channel- they can make a few extra pennies out of customers that way. Whatever happened to being generous with your customers to keep them on side?

I really can't see any business that makes money from a subscription based channel devaluing the product by taking away the best programs. That would be a ridiculous buisness plan to follow. Also, Sky were just told to charge BT a lower rate for the channels, not to force them to let them show them. It's in Sky's interests for BT to carry their channels - it makes them money.

But it makes them more money if the BT subscribers decide to switch to Sky instead. Which is what they're encouraging by moving shows like Soccer Saturday off of Sky Sports 1 and showing them exclusively on a Sky-only channel.

Well yeah obviously, but my point was about them getting greedy- they're already making one hell of a profit but are inconveniencing customers, eg BT subscribers, in an attempt to make even more. Like I said, what happened to trying to keep the customers on side? They seem to take them for granted, and as Fred has said there is a perceived arrogance there towards their own customer base that probably puts off potential new subscribers.

Unless they've decided now with SS1 free of a 6 hour program on a Saturday afternoon it is able to show other stuff. SSN is carried by Virgin as well. Likelyhood is that it is just all part of SSNs relaunch. As you said. BT subscribers. Who are not Skys customers. It's like saying Tesco shouldn't sell eggs in a sale because those that shop at Sainsburys might not like it

But Sky receive a cut of the money from BT anyway, and BT have the funds to do so through their subscribers. Sainsbury's don't pay Tesco money to sell their eggs and then get told afterwards that they're only going to allowed to sell Tesco Value ones. Tesco do piss their customers around but not quite on that scale.

The point is that Sky has become a monopoly, so market forces don't work. They can basically choose how much they charge BT - why would they fund a rival? The government has to step in by way of regulators to make sure they act fairly. Tesco isn't a monopoly...yet.

I'm guessing you're with BT? Perhaps Sky simply thought "Why broadcast this program four times in total at the same time when we can just stick it out on a newly relaunched SSN"

Which has happened. Sky were told to lower what they charge BT & Virgin for Sky Sports.

Completely agree. Sky will do what Ofcom tell them. There's an interesting dilemma with a company prepared to invest a lot of money in certain sports but risking not being allowed to enjoy the sole viewing figures that follow.
