Any thoughts? Were any of you there?
Not read article yet but I said to my mates after the match that I feel the two stripe shirt has now lost is 8-2 association cos for me it will always now be associated with our Anfield triumph.

Yes I was there...
and that's just about all I want to say or is all there is to say about the game, at least from a Cobblers supporters point of view.

Absolutely right. We were wearing the 2 strips shirts when I saw my first live game in August 1973 and I have loved them ever since. And now this great occasion will mean they will always be remembered. Mind you I hope we play in the claret shirts in the Carling Cup Final !!

I hope now that in the future when people think of Northampton Town they think of the club that knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup rather than the team that lost 8-2 to Man Utd with Best scoring six.

Great article.
Just a though, in 20 or 30 odd years, do you reckon they will still be showing Abdul Osman's penalty going in at the Kop end?

Hello, I was there and we could have a penalty early in the game but the ref thought otherwise, some things never change when teams play Man Utd! I stood in the temp stand in the reserved side and if I had a gun I may have shot Geo Best! But what a player he was, he had a point to prove with Busby and didn't he prove it! One thing that stands out in my mind was when Eric Ross took the ball of Best in the middle of the park and a loud cheer went up from cobblers fans! Happy Day's at the county ground

I reckon most football fans have an idea of the day George Best scored six and have seen the clips - but they'd mostly have no idea who it was against - that was all about George Best. OK, part of our story is about the "demise" of Liverpool, but I reckon loads of fans of other clubs will remember which League 2 club it was that Liverpool lost at home to in 2010, just like Colchester are remembered for beating Leeds in the 70s! We're immortal now!

Yeah York, remember it well. Wasn't it a two-legged affair and York went through?

Yes I was there and remember it well from my position near the top of the Spion Kop. Got the programme with some difficulty. Fed up of the numerous TV replays whenever George Best is covered.

Exeter in the Fourth Round? I thought we played Tranmere in the fourth round and beat them in a replay - that was a fantastic night with a big crowd. I wasn't allowed to go to the Man Utd game in case there was trouble. I do remember being hauled into the sports shop in Gold Street by the owner with my mate, as the United fans walked in their hordes up from the railway station!! Surely wouldn't be allowed these days.

Exactly, that why I put it. You must be a similar age, I wasn't allowed to go for the same reason although I was at the Tranmere match when we played in blue shirts and white shorts?

I was there and hated every bit of it. I was not there to see us lose, so when Dave Bowen said there was no plan to specially mark George Best, I thought he was off his trolley. And every time Best scored I hated him for it. Now, of course, I can see how lucky I was to witness his genius...but make no mistake it was a horrible day for all of us who had hopes of an upset.
